Image analysis of rock paintings of Faia site (Parque Arqueológico de Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Guarda, Portugal)

Abstract

[EN]Faia rock art site is located in a narrow granitic canyon dug by the river Côa. Rock art representations of this site constitute the major set of palaeolithic and postpalaeolithic paintings of Côa Valley rupestrial cycle. The site is composed by several motifs painted on exposed rocks. The two studied panels are of problematic visualization, which difficult tracing as the reddish tone of the supporting rockmask the areas in which the pigment was applied, and also the partial hiding of the paintings by the proliferation of lichens and phototrophic biofilms on the rock surface. The digital images, highly correlated, were digitally decorrelated by means of Principal Components Analysis to improve visualization, allowing the differentiation of the pixels corresponding to different coverages by means of false-colour images The implementation of these techniques sensibly reduces time employed in documentation, avoiding the risk of affection of the documented cultural assets.
