Abstract

[EN] Our goal is to evaluate the historical role that kinship had on social relations in the castros of the Iberian Northwest, given their consideration as segmentary societies. We will review the role of kinship in current anthropological debate and demonstrate that the idea of kin-based societies as a marker of non-state communities is not applicable to protohistorical societies. The segmentary lineage and the conical clan models are inadequate for our region, because they do not agee with the modes of territorial organisation and production. Alternative models will be suggested which take into account identity relations, interaction mechanisms between settlements and the symbolic universe of Iron Age societies in the Iberian Northwest.
