Polifenoles: propiedades y papel en desarrollos biomédicos

Abstract

Una dieta saludable es vital para nuestra salud ya que ayuda a prevenir malnutrición y diversas enfermedades. Los polifenoles son sustancias que se encuentra en mayor proporción en los productos de origen vegetal y que han demostrado tener beneficiosas propiedades para la salud humana debido a su gran carácter antioxidante. Por esto, en los últimos años se han desarrollado numerosos trabajos dirigidos a la utilización de estos compuestos en sistemas poliméricos para aplicaciones biomédicas. Con el objetivo de paliar los problemas de biodisponibilidad de los polifenoles, se han desarrollado diferentes estrategias basadas en la nanotecnología que han demostrado ser efectivas para la liberación de estos compuestos. Un ejemplo es el reciente desarrollo del conjugado de ácido rosmarínico y quitosano con excelentes propiedades biológicas que lo hacen un interesante biomaterial para aplicaciones en piel.

A healthy diet is critical for our well-being since it helps to prevent malnutrition and different diseases. Polyphenols are chemical substances mainly found in plants-based products with proven beneficial properties for human health due to its antioxidant power. For this reason, over the last years numerous works have described the use of these compounds in polymeric systems for biomedical applications. In order to mitigate bioavailability issues of polyphenols, different nanotechnology-based strategies with demonstrated efficacy have been developed for the delivery of polyphenols. An example is the development of novel chitosan-rosmarinic acid conjugates with excellent biological properties that makes them an interesting biomaterial for skin applications.
