La comparación entre los dos grandes imperios mediterráneos de la Edad Moderna surgió en las primeras décadas del siglo XIX, debiéndose a Leopoldo von Ranke el primer intento de estudio, pero fue abandonada esta línea de trabajo hasta que la retoma Fernand Braudel a mediados de la presente centuria. Por desgracia, en el momento actual este tipo de estudios resultan marginales dentro de la gran producción historiográfica del siglo XVI, y en especial de la época del Emperador, lo que provoca que contemos con vacíos documentales y explicativos manifiestos.
