Se estudia la aparición del concepto de perversión sexual en la psiquiatría y en la medicina legal de la Francia de la segunda mitad del siglo xix, a través, fundamentalmente, de las obras de Valentín Maguan y de Ambroise Tardieu. Se hace hincapié en las relaciones entre el discurso «científico» y el discurso «moral» de la época y se apuntan las aportaciones más notables de una medicina positivista y pre-freudiana que asumió plenamente el biologismo somaticista y las necesidades de control social.
