Definición, etimología e historia del vocablo «raza»

Abstract

[EN] After an introduction that starts with Saussure's concept of «arbitrariness of the linguistic sign» and outlines Wittgenstein's theory of language games, the article examines the definitions of race contained in some dictionaries (synchronic plane of the language), continues with an exposition of etymology in Spanish language (diachronic plane) and relies fundamentally on Voegelin and Fernando Ortiz for an overview of the history of the Spanish word ‘raza’. The arbitrariness and contradictions in all these fields, especially in that of the division of humanity into races, reveal a panorama so chaotic as to distort the scientificity of the word and, consequently, of the object that it calls: race, until one reaches the conclusion that it is a historically determined cultural construction without any basis in reality.
