Neste capítulo descrevemos a síntese de um alginato fluorescente com potenciais aplicações biomédicas. O alginato foi funcionalizado por um método reacional simples, envolvendo carbodiimida seguida de uma reacção ‘click’, ambas realizadas em meio aquoso. Após funcionalização, foi possível obter hidrogéis de alginato por reticulação iónica, os quais mantiveram cerca de 80% da sua fluorescência inicial após longos períodos de incubação em condições fisiológicas. O hidrogel fluorescente demonstrou ser citocompatível na presença de células epiteliais, suportando a sua viabilidade, actividade metabólica, proliferação e morfogénese. Este hidrogel foi também utilizado com sucesso na bioimpressão de padrões ordenados de células encapsuladas em microgéis
