Abstract

[EN] Sheep and goat production in the Mediterranean area is a traditional activity which represent important economic, environmental and sociological issues. The aim of this study was to compare some aspects of the economy of the main small ruminant systems in south European countries (Spain, France, Italy and Greece), using information from Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). The gross margin per annual work unit (AWU) show a high variation among countries in both sheep (25.000 to 10.000 €/AWU) and goat farms (20.000 to 11.000 €/AWU). In general, this parameter is greater in sheep farms in comparison to goat farms. Whereas gross margin/AWU is positively related to the number of animals per AWU in sheep farms, the relations between these parameters seems to be negative in goat farms. There are important differences between countries and systems in the impact of the direct subsidies on the incomes of the farms, ranging from 25 to 62% and from 8 to 21% in sheep and goat, respectively.
