Abstract

As a complement to the historiography about the eighteenth century, this article analyses the development of the group of businessmen of Navarrese origin in Madrid, the capital of the Monarchy, in the previous period, the middle decades of the seventeenth century. It focuses on the Echenique family, from the valley of Baztan, and reconstructs the biographies of its two main members that resided and died in Madrid. Their main economic activities are identified, as well as some other aspects of their social profile. The study is based on the information provided by the records of the public notaries of Madrid, complemented by punctual information from other archival sources. Keywords: seventeenth century; Madrid; Navarra; trade; credit; transhumant sheeprearing.
