Abstract

[EN] The VI-ETo model integrates the computation of vegetation indices (VIs) into the FAO56 guidelines to estimate the crop water requirements. This work has compared the spectral response of two Mediterranean tree crops with different morphological and physiological properties (olive and orange tree) under full vegetation ground cover conditions in order to improve the application of the VI-ETo model. The results showed that SAVI for full vegetation cover (SAVImax) was equal to 0.71 for orange tree while a lower value (0.55) was found in olive tree, corroborating the hypothesis by Mateos et al. (2013) that olive trees have particular spectral properties, with a SAVImax different to the generic value assumed for other crops (0.75). This difference affects the estimation of ET using the spectrally based crop coefficient. The VI-ETomodel was evaluated in an olive grove using SAVImax equal to 0.75 and 0.55, finding a reduction of RMSE from 0.73 to 0.58 mm day-1.
