Social mobilization and alternative food question in urban areas:agroecological consumer groups in Madrid

Abstract

[EN] Consumer groups are the most visible face of the alternative agroecological practices that have gained considerable importance in Madrid in recent years, particularly within the climate of citizen activism that has arisen in the wake of the 15-M movement. This article analyzes their characteristics and evaluates their potential to contribute to urban resilience in two locations in Madrid, Lavapiés and Vallecas, the former centrally located, the latter in the periphery. Our results show that the potential for these initiatives to generate social change varies with their territorial context and the actors who promote them. Their contribution to urban resilience strategies requires the promotion of local food systems based on dense stakeholder networks.
