Pax in Bello: La difícil paz entre Castilla y Portugal (1369-1431)

Abstract

[EN] This essay analyzes the relations between Castile and Portugal between 1369 and 1431. This period was especially difficult due to the poor relations between the reigning dynasties, the Trastámara and the Avís. To understand the meaning of the peace, it is necessary to take into account some factors that conditioned the dialogue between monarchs: historiography, religious and cultural ties, social relations, the idea of just war, and so on. Castile and Portugal had a common ground of understanding during the Late Middle Ages, but the war changed the conditions of mutual understanding. Once the war crisis was over, the two kingdoms managed to rebuild their peaceful relationship. The essay analyzes some important contributions of contemporary historiography on the theme of peace, within a context of war.
