En los primeros años del siglo XVI, los Reyes Católicos, que habían expulsado a los judíos de España en 1492 –el mismo año en que había culminado la conquista del reino islámico de Granada–, decretaron la conversión obligatoria al cristianismo de todos los musulmanes que vivían en los territorios de la Corona de Castilla. En 1526, ese mismo decreto se haría extensivo a los musulmanes de los territorios de Aragón y Valencia.
