Abundante literatura, escasa historiografía: cómo hacer del indigenismo un objeto de estudio histórico

Abstract

La amplia producción bibliográfica sobre indigenismo contrasta con el escaso conocimiento historiográfico del mismo, sobre todo en lo relativo a las décadas centrales del siglo XX, curiosamente la edad de oro del movimiento indigenista. La mayor parte de dicha bibliografía pertenece a un mismo mundo autorefencial y está constituida fundamentalmente por evaluaciones de parte, institucionales y personales, cuyos autores son habitualmente los mismos protagonistas del indigenismo o sus críticos (en muchos casos futuros indigenistas), dando así pie a juicios extremos y a imágenes y representaciones contrapuestas como expresión de los conflictos generacionales y profesionales que han sesgado o bloqueado la investigación sobre el tema. Se defiende y discute una nueva perspectiva que radica en la importancia de ir al estudio de las fuentes y en la necesidad de sacar la discusión en torno a la cuestión indígena del mundo autoreferencial en que se ha desarrollado, para definir al indigenismo como un objeto de estudio histórico
