En este trabajo el autor reflexiona sobre el tema de la esclavitud, valorando la utilidad de formular una definición del concepto, analizando su relación con el trabajo asalariado, distinguiendo lo que se podría llamar una sociedad esclavista de una sociedad con esclavos y, finalmente, centrándose en el fenómeno de la historia de la esclavitud en Europa occidental medieval.
