Abstract

[EN] Whether notarial records tend to obscure the operation of a labour market whose dynamics facilitated the verbal and not written hiring of ali types of workers (temporary or not, free and enslaved), the municipal ordinances that regulated productive activities as well as the salary accounting records offer usa different perspective, quite more rich and dynamic. Taking as an observatory the southern cities of Western Europe and, more specifically, the lberian coast of the Crown of Aragon - a space where slavery was a growing phenomenon from mid-fourteenth century onward -, this chapter examines, from a socioeconomic perspective, the employment of slave workforce in the Christian cities of the Western Mediterranean basin in the late Middle Ages.
