Edad y crecimiento de Cardium edule de la Ría de Vigo

Abstract

[EN] The main papers dealing on this species in the Galician waters are revised, and the ecological factors in the Vigo Bay are pointed out. Principally the results on the age and growth of Cardium edule in the Vigo Bay are studied. The growth rate is computed by means of several procedures which are compared among them: a) the distribution curves of length frequencies during the year; b) the data coming from the edge increases when the date of the ring laying out was known (January 1955) ; c) the measures on some individuals kept in experimental boxes, and d) the lengths of young individuals (seed) whose initial date of settlement was known. The same growth rate are obtained by means of all those procedures. The relationship between the length, height and width of the shell and their variation with the salinity is studied. The rings laid out on the shell, to determine the growth of Cardium edule are considered, studying either the number laid out yearly or the approximate date in which they are laid out. The same conclusions are obtained by several procedures. The influence of the first ring magnitude on the next growth is also studied. The WALFORD'S lines for Cardium edule in the Vigo Bay and those for the same species coming from come beaches of England are compared, computing the values of L, and k. Finally the weight growth and the volume to length relationship are studied in order to draw some practical conclusions about the productiveness in meat. [...]
