Abstract

[EN] This paper analyzes the ability, at the germination-emergence stage, of two yie1d function models initially proposed by Van Genuchten (1983) for evaluating crop salinity response at the adult stage. Also, a screening for salt tolerance of 38 barley cultivars is made at the germinationemergence stage. Both mode1s were shown to be valid and their results hardly differ according to the estimated values of the threshold salinity «CE», and «CE50» or salinity at which germination-emergence is reduced by 50 p. 100. Also, the results suggest that, for model 1, the threshold salinity «CE» is the most adequate parameter for screening barley germplasm because (1) it c1early discriminates the relative tolerance of the analyzed cultivars; and (2) in addition, it basically determines the barley cultivars response to salinity for the 50 to 100 p. 100 germination-emergence interval, which obviously is the most interesting from an agronomic and economic viewpoint. On the other hand, the «s» value, or de crease in the germination-emergence percentage for a unit increase in salinity, is a less relevant parameter, for the analyzed cultivar s , because of its smaller variation interval, which discriminates cultivars more poorly and has a relatively smaller effect on their response to salinity for the previously mentioned germination-emergence interval.
