Mitos y leyendas en torno a las esculturas de 'Verracos'

Abstract

El trabajo publicado recientemente por el profesor Antonio Blanco Freijeiro sobre cultura y simbolismo del cerdo me ha sugerido la idea de recopilar en un artículo todos los datos que yo había recogido para mi tesis doctoral, que están en relación con las esculturas de «verracos», pero que no había incorporado a la misma por salirse de la temática propiamente arqueológica. Estas esculturas zoomorfas, realizadas en granito y en variados tamaños, de las que son máximo exponente los Toros de Guisando, representan unas veces cerdos y otras toros y han sido objeto, desde el siglo xvr, de las más peregrinas y curiosas hipótesis en cuanto a su origen y significado. Asimismo, en torno a eiias se han inventado una serie de leyendas que la tradición popular nos ha ido transmitiendo a través de los años. Incluso, como se verá más adelante, se ha creído ver grabadas en algunos «veiracosa inscripciones que en modo alguno coinciden con la realidad. Por creer que todos estos datos pueden ser interesantes para un gran número de personas, paso a exponerlos a continuación comenzando en primer lugar por las teorías acerca del origen y significado de estas representaciones zoomorfas.
