[EN] Blooms of diatoms in offshore waters seem to be irregular in occurrence. In mangrove areas communities of dinoflagellates (red water species, luminiscent species) are very characteristic. Pyrodinium bahamense is the first species responsible for light production in "luminiscent bay". Asterionella mediterranea is represented by a form similar to those living in California and in the Mediterranean and it is believed that there is no reason to consider a separate var. pacifica.
