Teniendo en cuenta el valor potencial de las leguminosas grano como componentes de la dieta, es un objetivo prioritario, en programas nacionales y transnacionales de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico (I_DT), la obtención, por medio de la mejora genética, de variedades más adecuadas para el consumo doméstico, así como para el envasado y el procesado industrial. Dentro de esta perspectiva probablemente sea la judía-grano o alubia, la leguminosa cuyo consumo está más aceptado, uno de los alimentos más prometedores como fuente de proteína para la alimentación humana en un futuro próximo.
