[EN] Continuous underway analysis of environmental variables as well as phytoplankton biomass estimates was carried on during cruise SAHARA-I off Spanish Sahara (June-July 1971). Longshore as well as offshore setions were drawn at two levels: surface and 20 metre deep. Upwelling was particularly strong on Sections B and C although apparently existed all over the region. Upwelled water has lower salinity than surrounding water and a phytoplankton maximum is coincident with the maximum horizontal gradient of nitrate. A simple pictorial model is put forward as explanation of the processes taking place over the shelf
