Abstract

Francesc Darder (1851-1918), fue un protagonista principal de la cultura científica de Barcelona desde los años 1870 hasta su muerte. Darder trataba tanto con animales vivos como muertos, ya sea como veterinario o en su propio negocio de taxidermista, fue asesor de compras de animales en el extranjero; miembro activo de la "Sociedad Protectora de Animales y Plantas" de Barcelona, científico y divulgador, autor de numerosos libros y artículos de revista; director del Parque Zoológico de Barcelona (que se inauguró bajo su dirección en 1892) y promotor de la introducción de nuevas especies de mamíferos, aves y peces con finalidades económicas. Negocio, investigación y divulgación iban de la mano. Todos sus actividades se pueden resumir bajo una clave: se trataba de una historia natural aplicada. Esta ponencia intenta reconstruir las redes nacionales e internacionales de Darder a partir de sus publicaciones y viajes. Darder impartía charlas en toda Cataluña, pero también viajaba a París y otras ciudades europeas. Así se pueden detectar varios niveles en las relaciones de centro y periferia. En primer lugar, entre una metrópolis como París ("first city") y Barcelona ("second city"). Y, en segundo lugar, entre Barcelona, como centro urbano, y el campo, o mejor dicho, las ciudades en comparación más pequeñas de Cataluña. ¿Cómo circularon no sólo los objetos de historia natural, sino también el conocimiento, entre estos diversos espacios?
