La exclusión competitiva y la coexistencia desde la perspectiva de la lógica difusa

Abstract

El “principio de exclusión competitiva” se ha visto confirmado en algunas situaciones pero no en otras. Sostenemos que esta situación equívoca surge del uso de la lógica clásica, que define las proposiciones como totalmente ciertas o completamente falsas. La alternativa es tomar una perspectiva desde la lógica difusa mediante el empleo del concepto asociado de favorabilidad. Favorabilidad se define como un conjunto borroso de condiciones ambientales que son favorables para la presencia de una especie a lo largo de un gradiente que va desde muy favorable a muy desfavorable. La favorabilidad compartida se define como el grado en que las condiciones autoecológicas son simultáneamente favorables para dos (o más) especies que interactúan. Desde esta perspectiva, se describe un nuevo paradigma para explicar la coexistencia o la exclusión competitiva de especies. Al contrastar favorabilidad individual y favorabilidad compartida es posible determinar y comprobar cómo la segregación autoecológica, la exclusión competitiva y la coexistencia actúan diferencialmente a lo largo de un gradiente de favorabilidad compartida entre especies competidoras. Se presentan algunos ejemplos de mamíferos (cérvidos y liebres) que aportan un apoyo empírico a este nuevo enfoque lógico.
