Effects of Agricultural Management Policies on the Exposure of Black-Winged Stilts (Himantopus himantopus) Chicks to Cholinesterase-Inhibiting Pesticides in Rice Fields

Abstract

Les niveaux d'exposition aux pesticides dans les rizières peuvent être importants en fonction des politiques environnementales pratiquées. L'objectif de la politique de gestion intégrée de l'Union européenne est de réduire l'utilisation des pesticides et leur impact sur l'environnement. Les rizières constituent un habitat de reproduction alternatif pour de nombreux oiseaux aquatiques exposés aux pesticides utilisés et peuvent donc être des indicateurs précieux de leur risque pour la faune. Pour évaluer le succès de la gestion intégrée, nous avons examiné l'exposition des échasses à ailes noires (Himantopus himantopus) aux pesticides inhibiteurs de la cholinestérase dans les rizières sous différents types de gestion en mesurant l'activité de la cholinestérase plasmatique. L'activité de la cholinestérase a été plus faible chez les oiseaux échantillonnés en (a) 2008 après une période d'application intense de pesticides, qu'en (b) 2005-2007 et 2011 dans les rizières faisant l'objet d'une gestion intégrée à Doñana (sud-ouest de l'Espagne) et (c) dans les zones humides naturelles témoins en Espagne et au Maroc. En 2009 et 2010, l'activité de la cholinestérase a été plus faible dans les rizières de Doñana que dans celles de Larache et de Sidi Allal Tazi (nord-ouest du Maroc). Nos résultats suggèrent que la gestion intégrée a réussi à réduire l'exposition des échasses à ailes noires aux pesticides pendant la plupart des années. Il convient de prendre soin de mettre en œuvre des mesures de lutte contre les moustiques et les ravageurs à temps et avec des produits respectueux de l'environnement afin de réduire son impact sur la faune.

Los niveles de exposición a pesticidas en los campos de arroz pueden ser significativos dependiendo de las políticas ambientales practicadas. El objetivo de la política de gestión integrada de la Unión Europea es reducir el uso de plaguicidas y su impacto en el medio ambiente. Los campos de arroz proporcionan un hábitat de reproducción alternativo para muchas aves acuáticas que están expuestas a los pesticidas utilizados y, por lo tanto, pueden ser indicadores valiosos de su riesgo para la vida silvestre. Para evaluar el éxito del manejo integrado, examinamos la exposición de los zancos de alas negras (Himantopus himantopus) a pesticidas inhibidores de la colinesterasa en campos de arroz bajo diferentes tipos de manejo midiendo la actividad de la colinesterasa plasmática. La actividad de la colinesterasa fue menor en las aves muestreadas en (a) 2008 después de un período de intensa aplicación de plaguicidas, que en (b) 2005-2007 y 2011 en los arrozales sujetos a gestión integrada en Doñana (SW España) y (c) en los humedales naturales de control en España y Marruecos. Durante 2009 y 2010, la actividad de colinesterasa fue menor en los arrozales de Doñana que en los arrozales de Larache y Sidi Allal Tazi (noroeste de Marruecos). Nuestros resultados sugieren que la gestión integrada redujo con éxito la exposición de los zancos de alas negras a los pesticidas en la mayoría de los años. Se debe tener cuidado de implementar controles de cultivos de mosquitos y plagas a tiempo y con productos respetuosos con el medio ambiente para reducir su impacto en la vida silvestre.

Levels of exposure to pesticides in rice fields can be significant depending on the environmental policies practiced. The aim of European Union integrated management policy is to reduce pesticide use and impact on environment. Rice fields provide an alternative breeding habitat for many waterbirds that are exposed to the pesticides used and therefore can be valuable indicators of their risk for wildlife. To evaluate integrated management success we examined exposure of Black-winged Stilts (Himantopus himantopus) to cholinesterase-inhibiting pesticides in rice fields under different types of management by measuring plasma cholinesterase activity. Cholinesterase activity was lower in birds sampled in (a) 2008 after a period of intense pesticide application, than in (b) 2005-2007 and 2011 in rice fields subject to integrated management in Doñana (SW Spain) and (c) in control natural wetlands in Spain and Morocco. During 2009 and 2010, cholinesterase activity was lower in rice fields in Doñana than in rice fields in Larache and Sidi Allal Tazi (NW Morocco). Our results suggest that integrated management successfully reduced the exposure of Black-winged Stilts to pesticides in most of the years. Care should be taken to implement mosquito and pest crop controls on time and with environmentally friendly products in order to reduce its impact on wildlife.

يمكن أن تكون مستويات التعرض لمبيدات الآفات في حقول الأرز كبيرة اعتمادًا على السياسات البيئية المتبعة. تهدف سياسة الإدارة المتكاملة للاتحاد الأوروبي إلى الحد من استخدام مبيدات الآفات وتأثيرها على البيئة. توفر حقول الأرز موطنًا بديلاً للتكاثر للعديد من الطيور المائية المعرضة لمبيدات الآفات المستخدمة، وبالتالي يمكن أن تكون مؤشرات قيمة لمخاطرها على الحياة البرية. لتقييم نجاح الإدارة المتكاملة، قمنا بفحص تعرض الركائز ذات الأجنحة السوداء (Himantopus himantopus) لمبيدات الآفات المثبطة لإنزيم الكولين في حقول الأرز تحت أنواع مختلفة من الإدارة عن طريق قياس نشاط إنزيم الكولينستراز في البلازما. كان نشاط إنزيم الكولينستراز أقل في الطيور التي تم أخذ عينات منها في (أ) 2008 بعد فترة من الاستخدام المكثف لمبيدات الآفات، مما كان عليه في (ب) 2005-2007 و 2011 في حقول الأرز الخاضعة للإدارة المتكاملة في دونيانا (جنوب غرب إسبانيا) و (ج) في السيطرة على الأراضي الرطبة الطبيعية في إسبانيا والمغرب. خلال عامي 2009 و 2010، كان نشاط إنزيم الكولينستراز أقل في حقول الأرز في دونيانا منه في حقول الأرز في العرائش وسيدي علال تازي (شمال غرب المغرب). تشير نتائجنا إلى أن الإدارة المتكاملة نجحت في تقليل تعرض الركائز ذات الأجنحة السوداء للمبيدات الحشرية في معظم السنوات. يجب توخي الحذر لتنفيذ ضوابط محاصيل البعوض والآفات في الوقت المحدد ومع المنتجات الصديقة للبيئة من أجل الحد من تأثيرها على الحياة البرية.
