Abstract

[EN] Development of the new irrigation distric of Quinto (Zaragoza) affords the opportunity to characterize the initial salinity status of the soils within this district. Analyses of samples from soils, water tables and effluents indicate high concentrations of calcium, sulphate and magnesium. Horizons of pure gypsum are common, making the soil:water extract 1:5 unsuitable to assess soil salinity; an acetone assay using the same extract is proposed. Moreover, a method has been developed for monitoring soil salinity, in situ, using a hand-held electromagnetic sensor (SEM). The SEM was calibrated for several soil depths in order to predict soil salinity results were right despite the unfavourable soil conditions such as shallow auger-impenetrable limestone beds, gypsum horizons, and variable soilwater contents. Limitations in the SEM precision become important in the lower saliniiy range and should be evaluated when deeper sampling in feasible.
