Abstract

Treball Final de Grau. Grau en Psicologia. Codi: PS1048. Introduction: Positive Affect (PA) and Negative Affect (NA) have been linked to the etiology and maintenance of emotional disorders. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS, Watson, Clark & Tellegen, 1988) assesses these factors, but it has only been validated in general populations, both in its original version and in Spanish population. Objective: The objective of the present study is to offer preliminary validation data of the PANAS Trait scale in a Spanish clinical sample with Adjustment Disorder (AD). Method: The sample consisted of 106 patients (29 men and 77 women) with a mean age of 31.27 years (SD = 9.49). Results: The statistical analyses showed a Cronbach alpha of .92 for the PA and .81 for the NA. The reliability test-retest was conducted with 16 patients and a coefficient of .80 was obtained. The exploratory factor analysis emerged in two-dimensional structure, explaining 30.95% of the variance the factor 1 (PA), and 12.67% the factor 2 (NA). Regarding the convergent validity, significant correlations were obtained with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the State-Trait Anxiety Questionnaire (STAI-R), with -.63 and -.56 respectively for the positive items, and .65 and .50 respectively for negative items. Conclusions: The results of reliability and validity obtained are similar to those found in the original validation. Also the factorial analysis shows the same two-dimensional structure as the original questionnaire. All this indicates that the PANAS scale is an assessment instrument that has excellent psychometric properties and allows the evaluation of PA and NA in clinical populations, being this a very relevant aspect for the evaluation and treatment of emotional disorders.
