O papel dos estereótipos de gênero na leitura e no processamento de frases em português brasileiro (PB) = The role of gender stereotypes in reading and processing sentences in brazilian portuguese (BP)

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between anaphora and antecedent in sentences with gender stereotypes, using self-paced reading. We analyzed sentences such as: (i) "John saw Mary while she/he was putting on the skirt," (ii) "Mary saw John while she/he was shaving," and (iii) "John saw Mary while she/he was brushing teeth," to examine the influence of gender stereotypes (male, female, and neutral) on the retrieval of object-position anaphora. We compared sentences where the gender stereotype does not interfere, contradicts the retrieval, or is neutral. Personal pronouns refer back to previously mentioned subjects. The initial hypothesis was that there would be a preference for pronouns that agree in gender and number with the antecedent. However, the results indicate a preference for the masculine pronoun "he," regardless of the antecedent's gender, suggesting that the retrieval of the object DP is faster. Additionally, there were differences in stereotype processing between male and female participants
