Abstract

Starting from an introductory approach to knowledge organization, some of the main aspects related to its origins and the evolution of the scientific field, from the end of the 19th century until the beginning of the 21st century, as well as some of the main approaches, studies and research trends in this area, are identified. Based on this approach, we present the recent trends of knowledge discovery systems in digital environments, which challenge professionals in anticipating the supply of qualitative information and related to the contextual needs of information users. In this context we will present the concepts of convergence and semantic distance and knowledge discovery systems as well as their implications in the processes of information organization in context.
