by Seabird is a novel narrated by Seabird, the art, or artistic persona, created by the novel's two protagonists at contemporary art school. Through close third-person narration, Seabird recounts her creators' reunion five years later on a British Columbia Gulf Island, where the women must decide what to do with their unfinished art project—and with their relationship to artmaking and to each other. Having gained consciousness through the events of this novel, Seabird also narrates from the subjective "I" as she leaves the island to pursue her own autofictional journey. The metafictional elements of this novel support the philosophical questions Seabird investigates about the role of the narrator in contemporary fiction.
