Este artículo afirma que los conceptos epistemológicos y axiológicos más relevantes para la ciencia son susceptibles de expresarse en grados. Ello vale para la objetividad, la subjetividad, la intersubjetividad y, lo que es más importante, para el concepto de realidad. El ser humano y las sociedades no se confrontan a un mundo único y dado, sino a diferentes grados de realidad. Parte de la realidad es artificial. Un ejemplo típico es la así llamada «realidad virtual». Se mantiene que las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones posibilitan una expansión del mundo real, distinguiendo tres entornos del ser humano:la physis, la pólis y el espacio electrónico.
