Carlos Casares en el espacio francófono: La trayectoria editorial de Monseigneur

Abstract

Carlos Casares (1941-2002) played a vital role in the recent history of Galician culture, transcending the borders of the regional community where he was born. Casares was a teacher, writer, publisher as well as translator. His work has been translated into over a dozen languages, both in a monographic format and as anthologies. In the year when the Galician Academy pays tribute to him to celebrate Galician Literature, we highlight the publishing of posthumous translations, thus contributing to the international impact of his work. In this article, we propose studying the translation process involved in his third novel, Ilustrísima (1980), recently published in French (2013), following a protracted search for a publisher. In order to carry out the analysis of the translation, besides focusing on the specific (intralinguistic and cultural) problems involved in the translation, we look into the unpublished paratextual (para-translative) elements to which we have had access in the course of our research, delving into the reception given this novel in the French-speaking community.
