Poscolonialismo, oralidad y protesta: el impacto de la traducción al español de Half of a Yellow Sun, de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Abstract

This dissertation represents an exhaustive analysis of the Spanish translation of the novel “Half of a Yellow Sun”, written by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Itdiscusses the main translation challenges found within the novel and post-colonial African literature in general. This dissertation is divided into three parts: a literature review that aims to set the theoretical framework of the research and to reflect on the current and past state of post-colonial African literature; a translation analysis, where the main problematic terms and expressions identified in the novel are organised into categories and their translation strategies discussed; and finally, an analysis of the three surveys conducted to test the impact of certain terms of the novel on the readers. These surveys presented original extracts from the novel, the related extracts from the official Spanish translations and those we have developed according to our proposed translation strategy. This investigation evidences the extraordinarily complex role that post- colonialism plays in African literature, how it determines the creation and aims of its stories and makes them more than mere celebrations of artistic production. Confronting the hypothesis allowed us to discover several uses of the generalisation strategy, as well as different degrees of adaptation to the original meaning of the novel.
