MENTE Y METODO EN LA HISTORIA DE LAS IDEAS

Abstract

Cuando estudiamos la historia de las ideas, las observamos como aparecen en textos y en otros artefactos pertenecientes al pasado. Esto parece bastante evidente. Sin embargo, al tratar de especificar el sentido de «idea», nos introducimos en una controversia intensa. Según algunas corrientes académicas, las ideas son el producto de las formas de discurso o del lenguaje concebido como construcción social. Otras posturas defienden que las ideas expresan creencias o deseos concebidos como propiedades individuales. Una forma de poner orden en esta controversia es clasificar las diferentes posturas académicas según la perspectiva filosófica sobre la mente a la que se muestren afines. Cuando estudiamos la historia de las ideas, tratamos éstas como algo parecido a productos mentales. Así pues, los debates acerca de la naturaleza de la historia de las ideas reflejan a menudo diferentes visiones filosóficas acerca de la mente, sobre todo acerca de la forma en que ésta produce las ideas tal y como aparecen en los artefactos del pasado. Aquellos académicos que ven en las ideas un producto del lenguaje, consideran la mente como una construcción social, pues creen que la forma social de un discurso fija las ideas, creencias y deseos del individuo. Del mismo modo, los académicos que consideran las ideas como expresión de los deseos o creencias, consideran la mente como una propiedad del individuo. Piensan que las ideas, creencias y deseos tan sólo reflejan el razonamiento particular o la disposición psicológica de aquellos individuos afectados por ellas.
