En su obra muestra Marcial un profundo anhelo de vivir una larga vida de verdad que le permita una existencia armoniosa atenta a los pequeños gaudia cotidianos como la amistad, la conversación, la literatura. Pero la enfermedad, el sufrimiento, el dolor impiden disfrutar de la vida. Marcial se compadece del dolor de sus amigos o critica a aquellos cuyos males son consecuencia de sus vicios. De esta forma nos presenta un cuadro vivo de los muchos males y sufrimientos a los que el romano de la época de Marcial estaba expuesto y que amenazaban el gozo de vivir.
