Abstract

Although figurative language is a resource that often forms part of oral and written texts of various kinds, it is not usually dealt with in the curricular content of textbooks for the teaching-learning of mother tongues and foreign languages. It is indisputable that affective-motivational components play a major role in the acquisition of phraseological competence. In the present paper, therefore, the aim is to demonstrate that the didactics of two manifestations of figurative language – metaphor and metonymy– is possible on the basis of idiomatic syntagmatic compounds used in chess terminology since, as the hypothesis suggests, “syntagmatic compounds belonging to the field of chess can incorporate features of figurative language”, a phenomenon that makes it possible to design and implement gamified activities based on chess within the framework of Phraseodidactics. According to the results of this research limited to a representative sample of 13 syntagmatic compounds, the metaphorical and metonymical motivation has very different origins, which can be grouped into two categories: similarities in form and similarities in the way of acting.
