Las colecciones de novelas cortas constituyen un fenómeno literario y editorial característico de toda una época: el primer tercio de nuestro siglo. Estos relatos que, al gozar del fervor del público, alcanzaron amplia divulgación, fueron en su mayor parte obras de entretenimiento marcadas por la convencionalidad de sus acciones y personajes. Como contraste, algunos destacados autores lograron crear en ese marco verdaderas obras maestras, con la conciencia de elevar esta narrativa a la categoría de poema. Gabriel Miró, Ramón Pérez de Ayala o Miguel de Unamuno son los nombres más representativos. Este tipo de "novelas poemáticas" son el resultado de una estética personal y coherente, y también de las posibilidades de un tipo especial de narración. La intensidad del poema requiere la brevedad y concisión del texto.

The short story collections constitute a literary and editorial phenomenon characteristic of a whole period: the first third of our century. These stories, greately accepted by the reading public and very wide spread were. in their most part, entertaining works marked by the conventionality of their actions and characters. As a contrast, some outstanding authors achieved to create within that frame some real master works, with the aim of elevating this fiction to the category of a poem. Gabriel Miró, Ramón Pérez de Ayala or Miguel de Unamuno are its most representative names. This type of "poetic short story" are both the result of personal and coherent aesthetics, and of a special type of narrative. The intensity of the poem requires text brevity and conciseness.
