Treino cognitivo em idosos institucionalizados

Abstract

Given the growth and longevity of the elderly in our society, it becomes increasingly necessary to create strategies for an active aging, aspiring more quality years lived. It is known that throughout human development there are gains and losses. Studies have documented the decline of memory capacity in older individuals. However, there are numerous scientific evidence of brain plasticity that underlie cognitive intervention through Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST). Accordingly, and given the changes involved in the cognitive process that can directly affect the well-being, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy was applied, based on the book "Train your Brain" with the objective of describing the impact (positive/negative) of an institutionalized group of elderly. The longitudinal study of exploratory and descriptive nature was conducted in a Social Solidarity Institution in the district of Bragança (Fundação Betânia), being the sample formed by 12 individuals chosen by the implementation of the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), by a sociodemographic questionnaire for the elderly without prior diagnosis of dementia and with a previous experimental application of the CST. The results show an improvement of cognitive performances, demonstrating the ability of brain plasticity in older individuals. The implementation of this CST showed a significant impact in the performance of the individuals studied given that significant differences were found in the averages obtained in a beginning stage, middle and final of the Programme (p < 0,0001).
