Abstract

Research on sign language phonological awareness in deaf signers is recent. Therefore, the role of this skill in the process of language acquisition and in acquiring literacy as a second language (L2), in an alphabetical code, is becoming gradually known. Prior research indicates that the ability to think about sublexical units may have important implications for deaf individuals on both the process of acquiring a first language (sign language) and an L2 (language written in an alphabetical code). This paper presents studies about the phonological awareness in oral and sign language and discusses the contributions of these investigations. It is believed that the contributions from these studies may reinforce actions which assure the early access of deaf children to sign language, as well as promote thought about pratices of teaching reading for deaf people which take into consideration linguistic skills and the phonological awareness in sign language.
