Conhecimentos sobre Tabagismo entre Estudantes de Medicina

Abstract

Background: Medical education, as well as that of other health care givers, is crucial in the control and prevention of tobacco use. However, evidence suggests that medical students have poor knowledge about tobacco-related diseases. This study aims to evaluate knowledge about cigarette-smoking among medical students, and assess the impact of a seminar. Conversely, the students’ beliefs and attitudes regarding tobacco control were observed. Methods: Cross-sectional survey. The students completed questionnaires before and after a 90-minute seminar about cigarette- smoking. Results: A total of 171 medical students were included in the study. Considering all questions, the students had an overall rate of 72.9% correct answers in the pre-test and 95.8% in the post-test. Spontaneous abortion, perinatal death, and certain kinds of cancer (like pancreas, kidney, uterine cervix, stomach and bladder cancer) were not considered tobacco-related by a significant percentage of students. Conclusion: The study found statistically significant improvement in almost all questions about smoking after students had attended a 90-minute specific seminar on the topic.
