Una joya de Luis XIV en Navarra

Abstract

Juan de Galdeano was born in Peralta in 1615. His life was linked to the Order of St. John of Jerusalén, in which he professed. When he was general of the Army in Malta, in 1664 he helped the French monarchy to attack the Berber corsairs in the Algerian coast. Luis XIV, in appreciation of all Juan had done, sent him to Malta a golden piece of jewelry with one hundred and three diamonds. On the obverse it had the Maltase cross surrounded by several diamond circles and a bow, and a Luis XIV portrait on the other side. Juan sent the piece to Navarra and in 1673 he decided that it should be added to Galdeano family and to his house in Peralta. Men only could be in the line of the sucession.
