La Misericordia divina en Juan Pablo II

Abstract

This is a study of the Divine Mercy in the magisterium of John Paul II. A detailed study is made of the concept of mercy in his principal documents, with a special focus on the trinitarian trilogy: encyclicals Redemptor hominis, Dives in misericordia and Dominum et vivificantem. Particular attention is paid to the encyclical Dives in misericordia, which offers an ample monothematic reflection on mercy and therefore forms the basic document for the analysis of the concept of mercy. The concept of mercy in other writings of Pope John Paul II, both before and after his election as Pope, is also studied. Finally, some inquiry is made on the influence of Saint Faustina Kowalska’s life and writings on the reflections of the Pope and on his devotion to the Divine Mercy. The following conclusions may be drawn: firstly, the theme of mercy is a true nucleus in the thought of John Paul II, who experienced this mercy in his lifetime through contact with people who were themselves models of mercy. Secondly, John Paul II believed that the world today needs to hear the message of mercy and to recall that the divine mercy puts limits to evil. Finally, the spirituality of divine mercy spread by Saint Faustina Kowalska has been theologically reinforced by the teachings of John Paul II.
