Abstract

Con motivo del VII centenario de la muerte de S. Alberto Magno, Juan Pablo II invitaba a hacer presente entre nosotros «el sentido esencial de su obra, una obra a la que no podemos menos de conferir una significación y un valor de solidez y permanencia » La importancia de este gran Doctor de la Iglesia —continuaba el Romano Pontífice— consiste sobre todo en haber puesto los fundamentos de una teología científica para la que no puede existir ningún conflicto serio entre la razón y la fe. S. Alberto no rechazaba ni exageraba el valor de las nuevas explicaciones del mundo, que se difundían en su tiempo- asumía la filosofía profana —corrigiéndola y completándola—, y la integraba en su doctrina teológica. Demostraba así que la razón no ha de considerarse enemiga de la revelación; debe emplearse, por el contrario, a favor de una comprensión cada vez más profunda de los misterios divinos. Aunque razón y fe pertenezcan a órdenes distintos, ambas son de origen divino y están orientadas a la verdad. Según estos presupuestos, nuestro autor elaboró una síntesis entre el saber filosófico y teológico, reconociendo a la vez la autonomía de las ciencias profanas y la primacía de la ciencia sagrada. Los principios de su modo de hacer teología, destacaba Juan Pablo II, siguen teniendo todavía validez. El Magisterio de la Iglesia los ha recordado constantemente en el último siglo, desde el Concilio Vaticano I hasta nuestros días.
