Abstract

This investigation is based upon a comparative study between institutionalized and non-institutionalized adolescents and the aim is to understand the impact of institutionalization in what concerns emotional regulation and whether parental involvement in these adolescents' lives influences the way they regulate their own emotions. A sample of 158 adolescents, 81 of which institutionalized filled a self-report questionnaire composed by the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale and the Parental Involvement – Chicago Youth Development Study. Results have shown that institutionalized adolescents reveal greater difficulties in emotion regulation and a lesser degree of parental involvement, however no significant results were found, regarding the influence of parental involvement in the ability to regulate emotions. It was also found that these adolescents show specific difficulties in emotion regulation, namely in what concerns the execution of certain tasks and the control of impulsive behavior when experiencing negative experiences, as well as a limited access to emotion regulation strategies. This investigation, therefore, intends to offer a contribution towards the development of programs that may promote basic skills, in order to these adolescents can grow in an emotionally adaptive way.
