João Menino – Comerciante ou Escravo?

Abstract

In the account of his trips to São Tomé, the anonymous pilot refers to the presence at the island of João Menino, “very old man”, “very rich black”. The majority of researchers has presented this character as evidence that it were not just Europeans, the “sons of the land” and the black slaves from the mainland, the lonely people who has constituted the chain of settlers in the archipelago. At the same time, have been also other Africans, by their own iniciative, to take advantage of business opportunities created though the island, especially the burgeoning crop of sugar cane. Without calling into question the lines of research previously pursued by historians who report the existence of João Menino, nor do their conclusions which confer him the status of trader, is objective of this work, walking in another direction, hypothesize that this man could have originally been a slave and, having the benefit of the royal decree of King Manuel I, signed in 1517, achieve manumission, and thus his freedom.
