Abstract

This dissertation aims to reconcile the fields of journalism and culture, aiming to comprehend cultural journalism through the case study of Comunidade Cultura e Arte CCA ). The driving purpose is to understand whether CCA is a media outlet specialising in cultural content, or rather a community of interest, established mainly online. Such is proceeded by identifying whether the selected content on the website bears the hallmarks of cultural journalism. In light of this, Chapter One deals with the Literatur e Review, where cultural journalism’s origin, definition and role of the cultural journalist (as distinguished from the canonical journalist) are discussed, exhibiting trends in cultural journalism as proposed by Silva & Silva (20 17 ) and a mapping of the c urrent landscape of cultural journalism in Portugal. Online Communities are also discussed: what they are; how they are defined and characterised; and the existing typologies of these communities as they occur in the virtual universe. Chapter Two correspon ds to the Methodological Options, wherein the research problem and aims are established. In doing so, the CCA Case Study is presented: what the project consists of and its framework; its Editorial Status; its Website ; and its consumers, employing the resea rch of Sebastião and Viegas (2021). Moreover, the Methodology is presented and the sampled articles to be analysed. At last, the final chapter is devoted to analysing these articles, presenting the results, and discussing why is it possible to consider CCA a s cultural journalism, bookended with a conclusion, pinpointing the main results, limitations and proposals.
