Teoria do foco regulatório no comportamento sexual: Adoção de comportamentos saudáveis

Abstract

There is a growing increase in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and this study aims to analyze the intention to adopt protective behaviors in the context of sexuality. Based on the Theory of Regulatory Focus, individuals may be oriented towards gain (motivation for promotion) or loss avoidance (motivation for prevention). This theoretical framework has recently been applied to sexual behavior. In an experimental study with 101 participants (51.1% female; Mage = 23.436 SD = 3.05) participants were asked to describe what their duties, obligations and responsibilities were or what their wishes, aspirations and ideally wanted to achieve when thinking about their sexual behavior with someone else. We hoped that manipulating the regulatory focus on sexuality would influence the intention to engage in different types of healthy sexual behaviors. We also expected gender differences in these behaviors. Results indicated that individuals focused on prevention (vs. promotion) have a greater intention to use condoms in sexual relations with casual and regular sexual partners. In contrast, individuals focused on promotion (vs. prevention) indicated a higher intention to perform STI screening tests. The results also showed that men (vs. women) indicated a greater intention to have preparatory behaviors (e.g., buying condoms). There were no interactions between the manipulation of the regulatory focus and the gender of the participants. The results highlight the importance of studying individual motivations in sexuality.
