Abstract

The implementation of BIM in the Construction Industry is triggering a response from the Higher Education Institutions. Through the analysis of national and international case studies, it is studied the level of implementation of this methodology in architecture education, in Portugal. The demand for qualifi ed professionals with BIM knowledge and competences has increased during the last years, following the digitalization of the sector. To fulfi l this gap in the market, short-term specializations have appeared for industry players. In other hand, the Academy has been updating the curricula of architecture and engineer degrees to include these contents, originating a new set of upskilled graduates. By comparing Portugal with countries technologically more developed, such as the United States of America, United Kingdom or France it was possible to testify the early stage of implementation of these contents, in the Portuguese Higher Education, being taught only the tools, mainly for 3D modelling. This situation, along with the dissemination of specializations and the arising of professional degrees at Professional Higher Education Institutions suggest a new career in the Built Environment, towards the education of a new player – “a draftsman in the digital age”. It was also concluded that a true BIM specialist must possess a degree in architecture or engineer, which fostered the proposal of this work, to include this methodology in the Integrated Master of Architecture at ISCTE-IUL.
