Abstract

Some associations between emotional intelligence, Machiavellianism and mental health (particularly anxiety and depression) are known. However the behavioral mechanisms that explain these relations lack in the literature. Accepting the centrality that both power tactics and Machiavellianism have in this approach, a moderated mediation model was tested having Machiavellianism as a moderator and power tactics as a mediator. Departing from a sample of 190 university students, this study aims to test how emotional intelligence influences the individuals’ anxiety and depression degree depending on the individuals’ power tactics and level of Machiavellianism. Results demonstrate that emotional self-regulation has an effect on individuals’ anxiety when individuals opt to influence others through aggressiveness tactic and only when the level of Machiavellianism is high.
