In this paper, the concept of annoyance to noise is reviewed, concentrating in the first part on two aspects of this concept, that is, on the feelings of unpleasantness, irritability, disconfort, etc., and in the perceived interference of noise in activities and, in the second part, on the third aspect of annoyance, that is, on the reports about psychosomatic symptoms of disconfort. Given that noise is considered to be a stressor factor, three components of the stress concept are studied, these are, the situation or in this case, the environmental parameters of noise, the subjective responses to it and the mediator variables between both (specifically, demographic and sociological variables, cognitive variables and personality factors). Lastly, the effect of habituation of these subjective responses to noise is considered.
